ORDER OF WORSHIP

July  21, 2024

NINTH SUNDAY after PENTECOST

+ + + + + + +

* indicates stand, if able; Bold indicates ALL read; use blue hymnal unless otherwise indicated

When we have understood about free will, we shall see how silly it is to ask, as somebody once asked me: “Why did God make a creature of such rotten stuff that it went wrong?” The better stuff a creature is made of - the cleverer and stronger and freer it is - then the better it will be if it goes right, but also the worse it will be if it goes wrong. A cow cannot be very good or very bad; a dog can be both better and worse; a child better and worse still; an ordinary man, still more so; a man of genius, still more so; a superhuman spirit the best - or worst - of all. – C. S. Lewis

THE CHURCH GATHERS TO CELEBRATE

INTROIT   Surely the Presence of the Lord Is In This Place   (Wolfe)

~ GREETING AND ANNOUNCEMENTS ~

PRELUDE    Processional on "St. Anne"  (Croft, 1708) (Young)

* CALL TO WORSHIP (responsive)

Even now God is giving into our hands a victory we cannot see.

Even now the Almighty is making a way forward for us.

God asks that we only believe God’s will for us is good.

Let us support one another in the walk of faith.

* HYMN #443 -- "Christ, the Great Foundation"

PRAYER OF CONFESSION  (unison)

Lord of history and Author of salvation, our world is surrounded by walls. We experience a chasm between our soul and Your presence. We find ourselves separated from one another. We are divided even within ourselves – we do the very things we wish we did not. Send Your grace today so all these barriers will fall down like the walls of Jericho. Rebuild a new faith which does not fear. Restore to us the joy of faith. In Christ, we pray. Amen.  (silent confession . . . )

ASSURANCE OF PARDON (responsive)

Farther than the east is from the west and the north is from the south, even farther has God taken our sins away from us.

God has created us. God has redeemed us. God has sent us.

The Lord who knows our heart and soul is the Lord who forgives our deepest sin.

Lord, help us accept your forgiveness and live in your grace.

* GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

MORNING PRAYER AND LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

* HYMN #379 -- "My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less"

PRESENTATION OF NEW MEMBERS

Presentation (responsive)

   Leader: What is the chief end of man?

   People: Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.

Profession of Faith

Prayer of Blessing

The Apostles’ Creed (unison)

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Questions to the Congregation
